Frequently asked questions

What is the BOLT Study?

The Behind the Meter Optimization of Load Technology (BOLT) Study  from Southern California Edison (SCE) seeks to understand how home energy devices like batteries, electric vehicles, and smart thermostats can help support the electric grid. When enrolled, your device may respond to energy events, and you’ll receive rewards for participating.

If you have any additional questions or need help signing up, contact scebolt@energyhub.com.

What are the eligibility requirements?
  • Have an active SCE account
  • Have Internet connection
  • Be a residential customer with an eligible Edison SmartConnect® meter
  • Have a qualifying device: electric vehicle(s) (Tesla EV) and smart thermostat(s), if applicable (Honeywell Home, Google Nest)
  • Receive electric service under rate schedule D, D-CARE, D-FERA, TOU-D, or TOU-D-T

If you have any additional questions or need help signing up, contact scebolt@energyhub.com.

How do I sign up for the BOLT study?

Follow the enrollment link above to enroll. Add your EV before your thermostat, if applicable, as thermostats must be paired with another device to qualify.

If you have any additional questions or need help signing up, contact scebolt@energyhub.com.

How do the rewards work?

When you enroll in the study with a qualifying device, you’ll receive an e-gift card of $100 for your EV and $75 for your smart thermostat, if applicable, as a one-time enrollment reward. You’ll also earn a $25 reward —an e-gift card — for each device when you stay enrolled and actively participate this summer season (June 24 to September 30). See SCE’s BOLT Study Terms and Conditions for more info.

Important details:

  • Rewards are given per eligible device.
  • Smart thermostats must be paired with an EV to qualify. They are not eligible on their own.
  • Participation is free, and you can opt your devices out of any energy event at any time.

If you have any additional questions or need help signing up, contact scebolt@energyhub.com.

How will I be compensated?

You’ll receive an e-gift card via email for enrolling and staying in the study through the summer season. Rewards are provided per eligible device. See the full study terms and conditions for more details.

If you have any additional questions or need help signing up, contact scebolt@energyhub.com.

How do energy events work?

Energy events may be called in response to emergencies, overworked electrical grids, high wholesale energy prices, or for testing purposes. Energy events can occur anytime throughout the year. Multiple events may be called in the same calendar day.

When an energy event is called, SCE will notify you prior to the event start time. Your enrolled device(s) will make adjustments during the event. You always have the option to override by re-adjusting your settings based on your comfort and choice during an energy event. However, customers who override all events dispatched in a calendar year may be removed from the study.

If you have any additional questions or need help signing up, contact scebolt@energyhub.com.

Can I opt out of an event?

Yes. You can opt out at any time by changing your settings in the device’s app. Participation is voluntary.

If you have any additional questions or need help signing up, contact scebolt@energyhub.com.

Do I still have control over my device?

Yes, you can always override an energy event by adjusting your device’s settings in its app.

If you have any additional questions or need help signing up, contact scebolt@energyhub.com.

Why did my device change behavior unexpectedly?

During an energy event, your enrolled device may charge, discharge to the grid, or adjust setpoints automatically. This behavior helps reduce strain on the grid and is part of the study design. You can always change your settings if needed.

If you have any additional questions or need help signing up, contact scebolt@energyhub.com.

How do I leave the BOLT Study entirely?

To fully unenroll your device(s) from the study, email us at scebolt@energyhub.com.

Are behind-the-meter batteries eligible for the BOLT Study?

Yes, however, EnergyHub is limited to supporting batteries enrolled through Sunrun only.
