Sawnee EMC's Cooperative Battery Program FAQ

What is Sawnee EMC’s Cooperative Battery Program?
  •  The Sawnee Cooperative Battery Program rewards participants for allowing Sawnee to discharge their battery storage systems during times of high demand in order to offset energy usage inside their home.
  • Sawnee sends signals to inverters that control batteries to reduce peak energy use and help to lower future electricity costs.
How will I know if I’m eligible to enroll?
  • To participate in the Sawnee Cooperative Battery Program, you must be a Sawnee EMC member. You must also use a battery storage system controlled by a supported battery or inverter manufacturer, and your battery must perform in accordance to what is in your interconnection service agreement (ISA).
  • Please see the list of supported manufacturers and battery models below.

What is the incentive for participating?
By enrolling and participating in the program, you earn $50/kW as an enrollment incentive as well as ongoing participation incentives for kilowatt hours (kWh) offset.
How much can I expect to earn?
  • Your payment will be based on your power contribution during peak events. The ongoing incentive for participating in an event is $1/kWh. A typical event lasts approximately 4 hours. For example, if your battery offsets 2 kilowatts per hour during a 4 hour event, you would earn $8 for that single event.
  • Note: Battery system performance will vary based on size, configuration, internet connectivity, home’s energy demand and other factors. Please contact your battery storage system vendor or installer for more information about your battery's expected contribution and the incentive you can expect to earn.
When and how can I expect to receive my incentive?
The $50/kW enrollment incentive shall be applied as a Sawnee EMC bill credit, paid in two (2) equal installments, in the billing months of May and November. The participation incentive for winter season events will be applied as a bill credit in May and the participation incentive for summer season events will be applied as a bill credit in November. Summer season is considered the months of May – September and winter season is considered the months of October – April.
How can I ensure that I’ll still have backup energy if I need it?
Battery vendors and settings can help you configure your system to limit how much your system will discharge during events. Please note however that this will affect how much your system will earn.
Can I participate if I have a battery storage system only (without solar)?
Participants who don’t have a renewable energy system but do have an energy storage system that charges from the electricity grid may participate in the Cooperative Battery Program provided an Interconnection Agreement is completed.
Do I need to maintain an internet connection to my energy storage system?
If we cannot communicate with your energy storage system, or if your energy storage system cannot discharge when needed (due to a maintenance issue), the incentive paid will be affected.

How do I unenroll from the program?

Please contact your battery vendor or email SawneeBattery@energyhub.com to unenroll from the Cooperative Battery Program.
