Optimized EV Charging

What is PPL Electric Utilities Optimized EV Charging?
  • Optimized EV Charging lets EV owners earn rewards just charging at home. You’ll get $60 for each season you participate – for a total of up to $120 per year. Payments are issued as checks in the Fall and Spring following each season of participation.
  • By participating, you allow PPL Electric Utilities to shift your charging from busy on-peak hours to recommended off-peak charging times. This approach helps reduce strain on the grid. You still decide your charge level, and your EV will always be ready when you need it.
How does the program work?
  • After you enroll, you’ll keep plugging in at home the same way you do now. At times when the grid is busiest, PPL Electric Utilities will shift your charging to less busy hours. These adjustments happen in the background and don’t affect your final charge. If your plans change, you can override the adjustment in your EV or charger app and start charging right away.
  • In the summer season, charging will be shifted away from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. on non-holiday weekdays. In the winter season, charging will be shifted away from 6 a.m. – 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. -8 p.m. on non-holiday weekdays.
Will my EV always be fully charged?

Yes. Your EV will always reach the charge level you set. Adjustments may delay charging for a short time, but they never reduce your final charge. And if you need to leave earlier than planned, you can override the schedule at any time and charging will start immediately.

Which EVs and chargers qualify?

The program works with certain EVs and Level 2 smart chargers. To participate, your device needs to be connected to Wi-Fi and linked to your manufacturer’s account. Check the eligibility chart for the current list of supported devices before you apply.

Do I need a specific charger to participate?
  • You can participate in two ways:
    • By using an eligible Level 2 charger, or
    • By connecting directly through your EV’s built-in telematics system (the onboard computer that communicates with PPL Electric Utilities).
  • Both options allow small charging adjustments in the background, while you remain in control of your charge level.
  • If there are continued internet connection issues, customers will be unenrolled from the program.
How will I know if I’m accepted into the program?

After you apply, you will receive email confirmation. This can take up to two weeks. If we need more information to complete your enrollment, we’ll email you with the next steps.

What rewards do I receive?

You’ll receive $60 at the end of each season you remain enrolled and continue to participate.

How and when will I get paid?

Reward payments are issued by check twice a year, in March and September. Checks are mailed to the mailing address on your PPL Electric Utilities account.

Will I be notified of charging adjustments?

This depends on your EV or charger manufacturer. Some apps will send you a notification before or during an adjustment. If notifications aren’t available, you can always view and manage charging through your EV or charger app.

Can I opt out of adjustments?
Yes. After you enroll, you’ll keep plugging in at home the same way you do now. At times when the grid is busiest, PPL Electric Utilities will shift your charging to less busy hours. These adjustments happen in the background and don’t affect your final charge. If your plans change, you can override the adjustment in your EV or charger app and start charging right away.
