Smart Cycle FAQ
What is the Smart Cycle program?
- When summer temperatures climb, demand for electricity increases. The Smart Cycle program is designed to help reduce high electricity—or peak—demand. Reducing peak demand can help control costs for all customer’s long term.
- Participants agree to brief, limited adjustments of their thermostats during peak electric demand periods from March 1 through November 30. Enrolled customers can anticipate at least one adjustment and a maximum of 15 adjustments per season. Adjustments will not occur on weekends or holidays. Adjustments occur only when the thermostat is set to AC mode.
- Participants will receive a $75 one-time bill credit after being accepted into the program and an additional $7.50 bill credit per device during the months of March through November for staying enrolled in the program. If the thermostat was installed as part of a CenterPoint direct install program, the one-time $75 credit does not apply.
How will I know if I’m eligible to enroll?
To be eligible to enroll, you must:
-
Be a CenterPoint Energy residential electric customer.
-
Use an eligible internet-connected thermostat for cooling.
What is my enrollment incentive and when will I receive it?
Participants will receive a one-time $75 bill credit after being accepted into the Smart Cycle program. This credit will be applied within approximately 1 to 2 billing cycles after enrollment. If the thermostat was installed as part of a CenterPoint direct install program, the one-time $75 credit does not apply.
How and when will I receive the $7.50 participation incentive?
You will receive an additional $7.50 bill credit per enrolled device each month from March through November, as long as you remain enrolled in the program. This credit will be applied within approximately 1 to 2 billing cycles after enrollment.
If I replace my old thermostat with a new model, will I receive an additional enrollment incentive?
No, since you have already received an enrollment incentive, you will not receive an additional one, but you are eligible for the annual incentive for continued participation.
Are you going to control my thermostat?
- In some cases, your thermostat may be adjusted down 3 degrees prior to an adjustment event to precool your home.
- At the start of an adjustment event, your thermostat will be automatically adjusted up to four degrees above the current temperature.
- The adjustment will typically last no more than four hours on non-holiday weekdays and will occur between 1 p.m. and 6 p.m.
- Once the temperature adjustment is over, your thermostat will return to its normal set point and/or schedule.
- You can opt out of an event at any time from your mobile device, web browser or thermostat. You can also opt out simply by adjusting the temperature. When you opt-out of the precool, you also are opting out of the temperature adjustment.
