Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Wisconsin Public Service Smart Thermostat Rewards program?
-
The Smart Thermostat Rewards program is a voluntary program for WPS residential customers with eligible smart thermostats. When summer temperatures rise and electricity use spikes, WPS may make small, temporary temperature adjustments to enrolled smart thermostats. These adjustments help ease pressure on the grid, reduce the use of less efficient power sources and support a cleaner energy future — all while keeping energy more reliable for your community.
-
Adjustments are limited to 4 degrees or less and last no more than four hours. Events are called on weekdays from June 1-Sept. 30. Most events happen between 1-7 p.m. CT, but they may occur between 6 a.m.-10 p.m. CT (or outside those hours for emergencies). There will be no more than 20 events called per summer season.
-
Participants will receive a one-time $25 bill credit after successfully enrolling in the program. You’ll also get $6.25 in monthly bill credits for energy used June-September while you participate in the program. Your enrollment credit will be added to your bill within 60 days of being accepted into the program.
Am I eligible to enroll in the program?
To be eligible for Smart Thermostat Rewards, you must:
-
Be a WPS residential electric customer.
-
Have electric service in your name.
-
Use a qualified smart thermostat that’s connected to Wi-Fi.
-
Agree to brief thermostat adjustments during high-demand periods.
-
Not be enrolled in any other demand response program such as Response Rewards.
-
Have your account in good standing (no late payments or disconnections in the past 12 months)
What do I get for enrolling?
You’ll receive a one-time $25 bill credit after you successfully enroll in the program. Limit one per household.
When will I get my $25 bill credit?
Your bill credit will be added to your bill within 60 days of being accepted into the program.
How do I earn the $6.25 monthly reward?
- As long as you remain actively enrolled in the program, you’ll receive a $6.25 bill credit for energy used June-September.
- Depending on your billing cycle, your June bill may include energy used during May, a non-eligible month, which would reduce the amount of the credit. If this happens, the remainder of the $6.25 credit would be reflected on your October bill. You still will receive the full $25 credit for the four months of thermostat control.
If I replace my thermostat, can I get another $25 reward?
No, the reward is limited to one per household. However, you’ll still be eligible for the $6.25 monthly reward as long as your new thermostat qualifies you to remain in the program.

How do I sign up?
-
If you already have a qualifying thermostat, select your brand from the list of eligible models and select “Enroll.” You’ll be directed to a short enrollment form.
-
If you don’t have a qualifying thermostat, you can choose one from the list, purchase and install it, and return to complete your enrollment.
-
After WPS confirms your eligibility, you will receive a confirmation of your enrollment status via the email address linked to your thermostat account.
How will I know that a temperature adjustment is in progress?
Depending on your thermostat provider, notifications will appear on the thermostat or in your web/mobile application.
What happens during an event?
-
During an event, your thermostat will be adjusted by up to 4 degrees warmer than your current setting for no more than four hours.
-
Your thermostat may pre-cool your home before an event starts to help you stay comfortable. This will not occur if the event is urgent or during on-peak hours for Time-of-Use customers.
Will these adjustments affect my comfort?
No, adjustments are small, and your comfort is always the priority. You can override any event at any time through your thermostat, app or web browser.
Can I opt out of an event?
Yes, absolutely. You’re always in control and can opt out of any event from your thermostat, app or web browser.
What if I want to leave the program?
You can leave the program at any time. Just send an email to wisconsinpublicservice@energyhub.com to request removal. After your participation is canceled, you won’t receive the monthly reward, and your thermostat will no longer be controlled during events.
Who can I contact with questions?
