How it works

If you own a smart device, like a smart thermostat, EV charger, or home battery, you may be eligible to participate! If you don’t own one yet, you may be able to get one with an instant rebate through your utility’s online marketplace.

Your utility will reward you for conserving energy by making small, temporary adjustments to your smart device during times of peak energy demand.

You can opt out of adjustments at any time from your mobile device, web browser, or smart device.

Frequently asked questions

When electricity demand exceeds supply, utilities can either increase production—often by activating additional power plants—or reduce demand. Demand response programs focus on the latter by rewarding customers for lowering their energy usage during peak periods. Participants with smart devices, like thermostats, allow their utility to make minor adjustments—such as raising the temperature slightly on hot days—to ease grid strain. In return, customers receive financial incentives. This strategy enhances grid reliability, reduces energy costs, and supports the integration of renewable energy sources.

Requirements depend on the program. Typically you will need a qualifying device, an internet connection, and a certain type of energy source (either electric or gas). Learn more about programs in your area.

Enter your zipcode and country into our program finder to see what programs are in your area. If you see a program offered by your utility company for a type of smart device that you own, click on the program card. You’ll be directed to a program page, where you will complete a short application based on the device you have. Your utility company will review the application. If approved, congratulations! You will be immediately enrolled in the program.

Depending on your utility provider, you may be eligible to receive up to $185 in bill credits or prepaid Mastercards. Most programs offer an incentive for enrolling, as well as an annual incentive for staying enrolled.

We are always expanding our network of utility providers. In the meantime, you can reach out to your utility to see what other energy efficiency programs they offer. You can also learn more from the resources on our Fuel for Thought blog.
