How do smart thermostat programs work?
Smart thermostat programs are one of the easiest ways to participate in grid flexibility, since everything happens automatically after you enroll.
First, check if your utility offers a smart thermostat grid flexibility program by using our Program Finder. On the program’s page, check the eligibility requirements, and select which thermostat brand you have. You’ll then complete a short application. Usually, you’ll find out if you’ve been accepted in just a few days. After you’re accepted, you’re officially enrolled and will start becoming eligible for the program incentives.
What happens in a smart thermostat grid flexibility event?
Here’s what happens during a typical grid flexibility “event”:
- Electricity demand starts to spike and the grid is under stress.
- Your utility sends a signal to your thermostat, raising it slightly in the summer (or lowering it in the winter).
- This adjustment lasts only for the duration of the event, usually a few hours or less.
- Once the event ends, your thermostat returns to its preferred setting.
- At the end of the season, you receive rewards for your participation.
